Outdoor space in a Dubai villa is valuable. When designed well, it extends the usable area of your home by a significant amount. However, when left unplanned, it sits unused for most of the year and adds nothing to the property.
The difference between the two comes down to design. Good landscape design in Dubai accounts for the climate, the way the homeowner lives, the relationship between the interior and exterior of the home, and the quality of materials used. In this guide, we cover what good landscape design looks like, what it costs, and what to think about before you start.
Why Outdoor Space Matters More in Dubai Than Almost Anywhere Else
Dubai villas typically come with generous plot sizes. Many properties have rear gardens, side yards, and front driveways that together represent a significant amount of outdoor area. In most markets, this space is a clear asset. In Dubai, however, it is often underused because nobody has properly designed or finished it.
The climate is the main reason for this. Outdoor spaces that do not account for the Dubai climate become uncomfortable for most of the year. Specifically, spaces without shade structures, durable materials, and smart planting choices fail quickly in the heat.
In contrast, outdoor spaces designed with the climate in mind are a completely different story. A well-shaded terrace, a properly oriented pool area, a covered outdoor kitchen, and thoughtful landscaping make an outdoor space genuinely comfortable from October through to May. Furthermore, these spaces remain usable in the evenings throughout the summer months.
This thinking goes into every outdoor renovation and landscape project we complete at Revive Renovation.
What Landscape Design in Dubai Actually Includes
Landscape design for a Dubai villa typically covers several key areas. Understanding what each one involves helps you plan your project and your budget more accurately.
Hardscaping
Hardscaping includes all hard surfaces such as pool surrounds, terraces, pathways, driveways, steps, and boundary walls. Material selection here is critical because the wrong material in the wrong application shows its age quickly in the heat. Large-format porcelain tiles, natural stone, and concrete finishes all perform well in the Dubai climate when specified correctly.
Softscaping and Planting
Softscaping covers all the planting including trees, shrubs, ground cover, lawn areas, and planted beds. Planting selection for Dubai needs to account for the heat, the humidity in summer, and the water needs of each species. As a result, a well-planned planting scheme looks good immediately and matures well over time.
Swimming Pools and Water Features
Swimming pools are standard in most Dubai villa renovations. Beyond the pool itself, water features, pond elements, and decorative water walls all fall within the landscape scope. Moreover, the pool surround and coping finish play a significant role in how the overall outdoor space looks.
Shade Structures
Pergolas, shade sails, and covered terraces are not optional in Dubai. Instead, they are what make outdoor spaces genuinely usable. The design and construction of these structures needs integration into the overall landscape plan from the beginning rather than added as an afterthought.
Outdoor Lighting
Lighting transforms an outdoor space after dark. Uplighting for trees and plants, pathway lighting, pool lighting, and feature lighting on walls and structures all contribute to how the space feels and functions in the evening. In addition, good lighting design extends the hours that the outdoor space gets used throughout the week.
Outdoor Kitchens and Built-In Furniture
Integrated barbecue stations, outdoor kitchen units, built-in seating, and fire features are all part of a well-designed outdoor living space in Dubai. You can see a strong example of this in our Aura, Tilal Al Ghaf project, where we completed a full outdoor kitchen, covered terrace, and built-in lounge seating as part of the landscape renovation.
Irrigation and Drainage
A landscape scheme that looks great on day one but lacks proper irrigation deteriorates quickly. Because of this, automatic irrigation systems and proper drainage design are essential parts of any serious landscape project in Dubai.
What Makes Landscape Design in Dubai Different
Designing outdoor spaces in Dubai requires a different approach compared to most other markets. Several factors make this market unique.
First, the summer heat is extreme. Any material, plant, or structure that cannot handle sustained high temperatures and intense UV exposure will fail. This rules out a number of materials commonly used in cooler climates and makes specification a critical part of the design process.
Second, wind and sandstorms cause damage to anything not properly anchored or finished. This is particularly relevant for pergola structures, outdoor furniture, and lightweight planters.
Third, water is expensive in Dubai. An irrigation scheme that is not well-designed wastes significant amounts of both water and money. As a result, smart irrigation systems that respond to weather conditions and plant needs are now standard on quality landscape projects.
Finally, soil quality across most Dubai plots is poor. Successful planting therefore requires soil preparation and improvement before anything goes in the ground. Skipping this step leads to plants that struggle and eventually fail regardless of how well they are irrigated.
Materials That Work Well in Dubai Outdoor Spaces
Based on our experience completing outdoor renovation and landscape projects across Dubai, certain materials consistently perform better than others.
Large-format porcelain in light tones works well for pool surrounds and terraces. It handles the heat without becoming too hot underfoot, resists staining, and maintains its appearance well over time. Furthermore, it is one of the most practical choices for families with children.
Natural travertine is popular for a more premium finish. It has a natural warmth that reads well in a Dubai outdoor setting. However, it does require sealing and periodic maintenance to keep it looking its best.
Rendered concrete in ivory or warm grey tones is widely used for built-in seating, boundary walls, and planters. It is durable, versatile, and looks excellent when finished well. You can see this used to strong effect in our Aura, Tilal Al Ghaf project.
Timber decking requires careful species selection in Dubai. Hardwoods with natural oil content such as teak and ipe perform well in the climate. Alternatively, composite decking is also a strong option and requires less ongoing maintenance.
For planted areas, species that handle the Dubai climate well include fan palms, olive trees, bougainvillea, frangipani, natal plum, and a range of ornamental grasses. These are reliable performers that look good year-round and hold up well through the summer months.
How Much Does Landscape Design Cost in Dubai?
Landscape costs vary widely depending on the size of the plot, the complexity of the design, the materials chosen, and whether a swimming pool is included. Nevertheless, the following ranges give a realistic starting point based on our completed projects.
A basic landscape renovation covering hardscaping, planting, and irrigation on an average Dubai villa plot typically costs between AED 80,000 and AED 150,000.
A mid-range landscape project including a pergola, built-in seating, outdoor kitchen, quality stone finishes, and a considered planting scheme typically runs between AED 150,000 and AED 350,000.
A premium landscape project with a swimming pool, full outdoor kitchen, bespoke shade structures, natural stone throughout, lighting design, and extensive planting can exceed AED 500,000 on larger plots.

How the Landscape Design Process Works at Revive Renovation
We approach landscape and outdoor renovation as part of the whole home rather than a separate add-on. The outdoor spaces of a villa should connect naturally with the interior, using consistent materials, a clear design direction, and a lighting scheme that works across both areas.
Our process starts with understanding how the homeowner actually uses the outdoor space. Do they entertain regularly? Do they have children who use the garden? Is the pool for daily use or more occasional? Do they want a low-maintenance landscape or something more lush and curated? These questions shape the design direction before anything else moves forward.
From there, we develop a full landscape design proposal including layout drawings, material specifications, planting plans, lighting design, and a detailed cost breakdown. Once the design gets approval, our site team handles construction, planting, and installation through to completion.
You can see the standard of our outdoor renovation work in the Wildflower, Jumeirah Golf Estates project and the Aura, Tilal Al Ghaf project. In addition, you can read more about how we manage our projects here to understand exactly what to expect from the first conversation through to handover.
